Sahara Airlines was bought by Jet Airways, and rebranded as JetLite, on 19 January 2006.

Originally Sahara Airlines was established on 20 September 1991. It started its operations on 3 December 1993 with two Boeing 737-200 aircraft as Sahara Airlines. Initially services the airline catered to only the northern sectors of India, with Delhi as its base, and then extended its operations to cover the entire country.

Sahara Airlines was later rebranded as Air Sahara on 2 October 2000. On 22 March 2004, Sahara Airlines upgraded itself as an international carrier with flights from Chennai to Colombo, and later to London, Singapore, Maldives, and Kathmandu.

It was the first private Indian carrier to serve China with flights to Guangzhou from winter 2006. However, the move did not materialize. The uncertainty over Sahara Airline's fate caused its market share to drop from 11% in January 2006 to a reported 8.5% in April 2007.

Air Sahara offered flights to about 20 destinations and controlled about 12% of India’s domestic flight market during its peak as an independent entity.

On 16 April, Jet Airways announced that Air Sahara would be renamed as Jetlite. The takeover was completed on 20 April.

Jetlite was later merged with Jet Airways' in-house brand JetKonnect on 25 March 2012, thus allowing JetKonnect to emerge as a separate airline. Jetlite's Colombo and Kathmandu operations were integrated with Jet Airways own services to the pair at the time of 2012 merger.
