About Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park sprawls over 940 sq km. It was created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The park is the only place that houses Cervus Duvaceli Branderi. In the 1930s, the area of the park was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar, of 250 sq km and 300 sq km respectively. Though one of these was later disbanded, the area was a protected one until 1947. Depletion of the tigers in the following years led to the creation of a perfect sanctuary in 1952.

With the particular statute in 1955, Kanha National Park came into being. After which several stringent conservation programmes for the protection of the park's flora and fauna have given it its deserved reputation of being one of the finest and best administered National Parks in entire Asia. The Forest Department guides accompany the tourists around the park on mapped-out circuits which help them, see a right cross-section of Kanha's wildlife. The areas that must be explored are the meadows around Kanha, where blackbuck, chital and barasingha can be spotted throughout the day.

When in Kanha National Park, do enjoy walking and cycling in the buffer zone and take a safari in open jeep - on all days, except Wednesday afternoon.

• Bamni Dadar: It is known as the Sunset Point, and is one of the most beautiful areas of the park. Animals can be sighted around this point are atypical of the mixed forest zone, gaur, sambar, barking deer and the four-horned antelope.
• Park Safari: The best time to visit Kanha National Park is from October to June. Do plan to stay here for at least three nights, so that you can see more elusive animals.
• Kanha Museum: The unique natural history museum preserves skeletons of reptiles and animals and showcases wildlife conservation work done in Kanha along with an audio library of the sounds of birds.
